Girafus Cat Tracker with CatGirafus Cat Tracker with Cat

Girafus Pet Tracker

Reliable, lightweight, honest.

The Girafus Tracker consists of a small tracking device worn by the pet and a handheld base unit for tracking.

The tracking works on the hot-cold principle: if you walk in the right direction, the beeps get faster and more LEDs light up, and if you walk in the wrong direction, the opposite happens. Tracking requires some patience in the beginning, but in return you will find your cat even in the most remote basement hole.

How does the Girafus tracker work?

Love This Tracker! So Far So Good.
If you have a sneaky little dog like mine that’s really good at hide and seek (And sometimes isn’t even in the house!) this is a great way to keep track of your pet (dog or cat). She wears a cat collar with Beau’s Bells (Also purchased on Amazon) on it so my family has two ways of keeping track of her now. Thankfully she hasn’t managed to sneak out of the house again, but this “Cat Tracker” so far has reduced a game of “hide and seek” from 10 minutes and over to less than 5 minutes. To bring up some slight negatives but not enough to take away a star, it’s a little expensive but compared to other means of tracking your small pet (assuming they’re an indoor pet), it’s the least expensive option I’ve seen with the bonus of being simple to use and effective. The fact you have to change and charge the rechargeable battery (LIR2032H) that goes inside of the tracker tag every 5 days (the instructions say if the battery is 100% drained, it becomes unchargeable), is very annoying and some people may even forget to do this critical step. However, for me, I just put a reminder on my calendar so I don’t forget and plan on purchasing more of the batteries so I always have a charged battery for my pet’s tracker tag (You can buy them on Amazon). I can’t comment on its durability yet since it hasn’t even been a week since I got it.The only nitpick I have is that the screws that come with it are really TINY (There is some assembly required.). I wished it came with a tiny bag to hold them (like a really small sandwich bag or something) because they are definitely small enough to get lost themselves. To fix this issue myself, I just used the smallest snack bag I had to hold them.Overall, (just to never have to play my dog’s games again) WORTH IT.

Won’t pair up with new tag.
After the cat lost the two tags that came with the product, I ordered a new tag–which I was unable to register. First of all, the replacement unit was a Pink tag. AFter reading the confusing and incomplete pairing instructions dozens of time, I was unable to determine if each tag color is fixed against Based on the product with 3 and with 4 tags, it appears that the pink tag is hardwired for search #4. The next gap in the instruction id that the tag must be turned on for the pairing. But nowhere is there an instruction to turn on the tag–which is also vague, since there is no on/off switch on the tag. So the only way it can be done is by removing the battery. But, why remove the battery if the tag must be powered on to respond to the pairing command? This kind of sloppy instruction makes the pairing process far more difficult than it should be. But after thorough experimenting with the Set and search buttons, no combination worked. I couldn’t not pair the tag, which makes the tracker worthless. Is the problem, associated with the new tag, or simply the instructions is wholly inadequate? As an engineers with decades of experience in designing consumer user interface, I give this one a royal lemon. Please ignore myinitial rating. If it can’t be registered with replacement tags, it it pretty much useless. This is a very early comment on the Pro-track. I have a cat that likes to roam the neighborhood at night. Homes here are on acre+ size lots withalmost jungle like foliage behind the homes, where my cat can easily disappear. In the past, he can usually be located by clapping my hands as I walk up and down the street. But recently for unknown reason, this hasn’t been very effective. I suspect that he might have travel far behind the homes and may have gotten lost in the thickets. The more days that he is missing, the more likely he has gone much farther away. The first time I use the Pro-Track, I was able to narrow his location to one or two homes–instead of back tracking repeatedly while clapping my hands, and annoying my neighbors. I was about 800 fet from my house when I heard the first time it beep, I knew that the cat had to be nearby. At am hours, my cat modus operandi is to stealthily return home when he knows I am looking for him. I was about 600 ft from my home when the beeping started to slow down indicating my cat was moving away toward my home.. Just as I suspected, he was already in my front yard when I got back. I was elatded If I can get him home each night, there is much less chance that he might wander deep into the thickets and get lost.for many days.As an RF device, vs tracking devices that use SIM cell phone technology, setup is a breeze. As an aside, I have no options but to go RF as I live in a cell phone dead-spot. The cat is oblivious to the presence of the light weight tag on his collar. The beep from the tag meant to help the searcher to locate the animal has an unexpected benefit. It alerts my cat, much like clapping of my hand, that I am looking for him.In the coming months, I plan to write a more thorough review. Battery life, reliability, performance are factors that I need to address before I cangive it a haerty rating.

Poor direction finding & battery life
    1. It is certainly sensitive, but the downside is that when close (manual says 15-25m) it loses its direction finding capability. The manual says “you should have sight of your pet by now”! Maybe, in an urban environment, but 15-25m covers an awful lot of undergrowth to hide a recalcitrant cat. (TabCat was better in this regard, but it had reliability problems with battery replacement, pairing etc.)2. Battery life is awful; there’s a reason they include rechargeable batteries. There’s no warning when they fail so I have set a 14 day reminder to replace the battery. Happily battery replacement is easy and reliable.

This tracker works. All 3 devices set up ready for use with rechargeable batteries. The plastic covers easily fit onto the cat collar. I would suggest a clasp type easy release collar. My cats have been wearing these for 2 months now, we didn’t set them up as soon as we received as the cats were going to spend a period of time in a cattery. The cats now respond when you press the button, it’s almost as if they are being called! We give them a Dreamie when they return. One of the cats lost the collar a few days ago, we were able to track the collar down to the exact point, pick it up and put back on the cat. The collar was too loose.
